Choosing the Right Dinnerware

by admin on January 28, 2010

The dinnerware a restaurant chooses can be far more than functional.  Dinnerware can add to the personality of your restaurant table.  It can convey the theme, the ambiance and the design of your restaurant.  The correct dinnerware can even make the food more appealing.  By giving your food the proper backdrop, you will draw in the costumer.  When you are considering dinnerware for your establishment, take in account the following before making your final purchase: materials, durability, design and budget.

Whether it is fine dining or a more casual setting, china dinnerware can easily fit the atmosphere.   China is  traditionally characterized by its whiteness, translucency, and its strength.  China is made from a porcelain clay mixture.  It is pressed into a mold and can be fired with different glazes.  Bone china is made by mixing bone ash into the clay mixture.  Fine china is more translucent and can be very decorative.  It appears fragile, but with proper care and storage can be quite durable.  The higher the temperature of the firing, the more durable the product will be.

There are limitless choices when it comes to design, and the word “china” no longer refers to  grandmother’s precious heirloom dishes.  China can be made into many different colors by using different glazes on the porcelain.  It can be made into many shapes and sizes.  For instance, a modern Mexican restaurant may want to reflect the culture behind the food and choose a bright color; a citrus orange or a vibrant turquoise would be pleasant to the eye and appealing to the appetite.  A Japanese themed restaurant might want to choose a matte black or a creamy white to set the stage for delicious sushi and reflect elegance of the culture.  More contemporary restaurants might even want to choose a plate of a different shape, square, oblong, or rectangle wave.  (Prices can vary with the different styles)

Tuxton China is a privately owned dinnerware company with an array of products worth considering.  The company offers a variety of styles in dinnerware while staying environmentally friendly.  Tuxton China recycles and reuses scraps to produce vases and other decorative elements.  Tuxton China is very durable, light weight and can take abuse.  It comes in a variety of shapes and colors to fit very traditional settings to the more fashionable.  Tuxton China uses a polished single fire glaze on their products to cut down on scratching.  The polished single glaze is less abrasive than the two part firing process done by other companies.  Most breakage of Tuxton China is due to rough handling as they pride themselves on producing strong quality products.  Each Tuxton product is guaranteed to be lead-free, microwave, oven and dishwasher safe. (Prices vary with different styles)

Melamine is a resin, known as a thermoset plastic, that is becoming quite popular as a dinnerware material.  Melamine is a  durable, non-toxic, heat and break resistant product.  The plastic is molded into the shape of the dinnerware, it is quality controlled to insure that the product will last.  It is used mainly in buffets, schools, cruise lines, hospitals, and children’s dinnerware sets.  But since it is a plastic, it can adapt to many  food service atmospheres.  Melamine can be decorative and colorful.  Melamine dinnerware can withstand very cold to extremely hot temperatures.  It is not microwaveable, but it is top rack dishwasher safe.  Melamine can also be molded into many shapes to accommodate the functions of the establishment.  The Thunder Group has made a many dinnerware sets available.  They are relatively inexpensive, whether the style is simple or ornate.  (Prices vary with different styles)

Manufacturers may provide their own instructions that should be followed specifically to ensure the longest life from your dinnerware, be your final purchase china or melamine.  With proper care your restaurant will save money on replacements.  Also basic patterned dinnerware can be easier to replace.  As styles change, consider a dinnerware motif that will stand the test of time and compliment the growth of your restaurant.  Relay the message you want to send your costumer easily and elegantly with the right dinnerware choice.
