The menu is an important part of any restaurant. It provides one of the first impressions of the restaurant and food to your customers. By having nice menus and large displays, you can entice your customers and prepare them to enjoy your food. Because the menus are so important, it is critical that you select high quality menus that are durable and appealing.

One of the first things your customers will see when they arrive at your restaurant is a large display. These are typically used to advertise current special offers and meals. An A-frame sidewalk chalkboard is very traditional technique for encouraging customers to come inside and try your food. If you prefer a more modern look, you might like the sidewalk swinging sign or the write on / wash off sign.

Once inside, a wood frame markerboard or white melamine markerboard hanging on a wall near the front will interest your customers as they wait to be seated at a table. If you have smaller items you wish to highlight, such as fresh baked desserts, a tabletop markerboard is perfect for drawing your customer’s attention to an item.

Displaying the menu is a great way to encourage new customers to try your restaurant for the first time. Many people are hesitant to try new things, but become more eager and excited once they know there is something available that they will enjoy. A menu display case is a very classy way to highlight your menu, can be used indoors or outdoors, and is available in many different wood finishes to complement any style. A single pedestal broadcaster or double pedestal broadcaster is another alternative if you prefer to display the menu away from the wall.

And of course the most important menu is the one the customer will hold in their hand while they are seated. This is a great opportunity for you to show creativity and “sell” your food. A menu should be durable and resistant to spills, as they may remain on the table after the customer receives their drinks and appetizers. A single clear menu cover is perfect for a simple and straightforward menu. For a longer menu, you may chose a 2 fold menu cover or 3 fold menu cover to hold all of your items. And if you are really ambitious with your menu, there is also a 6 page menu cover available to suit even the largest selections. A black menu cover with gold lettering is the perfect choice for a fancier restaurant. You may have a print shop design and produce the pages of your menu. If you are creative, you may enjoy the opportunity to make them yourself.

A menu is the customer’s first experience with your food. These products will help you create excellent menus that will get your customers drooling in anticipation and coming back again and again.

The bar is an important part of a restaurant. Not only is it an excellent source of income, it also provides owners the opportunity to be creative from the décor to how the bartender creates and serves the beverages. This guide will show you what items you will need to start a bar in a restaurant.

A lot of equipment is used to create the variety of drinks your bar will offer. Many drinks require different ingredients to be blended together, so you will need a high performance blender that is capable of withstanding continued use. An immersion blender is a quick and easy tool for drinks that only require a small amount of blending, though you can also use a bar spoon. And of course, no bar is complete without a bar shaker. A collection of jiggers in a variety of sizes is necessary for measuring the amounts of alcohol that is going into the beverages. An ice bucket with tongs is a decorative way to display ice while keeping it cool. To prevent your sinks from getting clogged with leftover bits of fruit and ice, invest in sink strainers. Pourers help keep drink making simple and fun for your bartenders while protecting your drinks from dust and spills. You can choose to use free flow pourers or a measured pourer that control the amount released in each pour. A glass rimmer easily moistens the edge of a glass to prepare it for the application of salt, a necessity for any margarita.

The bar will also need some organizational tools to keep everything neat and organized. Keep your condiments and garnishes cool and fresh in this visually appealing iced bar caddy. Wire glass hangers are perfect for storing and displaying your stemware from the ceiling of the bar. You can also display your bottles in a bottle holder. Cleaning and maintaining the bar is made easier with rubber mats and bar mop towels.

Presentation is a big part of bar drinks, so you’ll need different containers and glasses to serve them to your customers. A wine cooler is perfect for keeping wine chilled on the customer’s tables. You will also want a collection of pitchers, carafes, and decanters to pour and store beverages. And of course, you also will need a wide variety of glassware for the customers to drink their drinks from including glasses for shots, martinis, margaritas, wine, and beer.

There are a lot of supplies needed to start a bar and it will be a large investment for the restaurant. However, it will be well worth it by providing you with happy customers and a great source of income.

A catering business is a great way to start your own business right out of your home. Because every event is unique, you will never get bored and will have the opportunity to help create a great experience for your clients. This article is a guide to many of the supplies you will need to successfully run your own catering business.

The food is obviously the most important part of catering an event. You want to select items that will present the food well while at the same time keeping it warm. No one enjoys a meal that has gotten cold, so you will need a wide selection of chafers. You will find a wide variety available from elegant chafers to modern chafers with gold accents to vintage chafers. Clear chafer lids can help attendants see what food is available while keeping it hot. If you want to serve soup, then you should also purchase a soup server.

On the other hand, if you will be serving chilled items, then you will need an ice housing that will keep them cold throughout the event. Serving dishes are great for food that can be kept and served at room temperature. Many different types are available to suit your needs, such as serving platters and serving bowls. Muffins, cookies, and other baked items look great in a bakery cabinet.

Attendants will also need something to drink with their meal. Beverage dispensers are a great way to display and serve beverages like tea or juice. You might also use pitchers or carafes so that your waiters can fill drinks so that the attendants do not have to repeatedly return to the buffet. Don’t forget insulated beverage servers or pots for serving warm beverages like coffee or hot tea.

Serving utensils are essential for dipping food onto individual plates. You will need a lot of serving spoons and serving forks for dipping most food items. Ladles are necessary for dipping soups and sauces into bowls. Serving tongs are good for items that need to be grabbed, such as cookies or rolls. Specialty serving items you will want to have include salad tongs, pastry scissors, and a cake serving set.

Presentation can help your food look even better. Tiered displays are a beautiful way to serve food and come in a variety of styles including tiered bowls and tiered platters. You can also use risers with serving dishes you already have for a similar effect. This waterfall display riser would make a great statement on any table. Cakes are always a great centerpiece and are best when showcased on a beautiful cake stand.

With these pieces, you will be prepared to cater any event your client books with you. While purchasing these pieces is an investment at the start, you will more than pay for them after catering a few events. Now all you have to worry about is what food you want to cook to serve in your dishes.

Summer is here once again. The kids are out of school and everyone is ready for lazy days around the pool and playing outdoors. One of the favorite summer pastimes is cooking outside on the grill. Who doesn’t love a good and juicy grilled hamburger or hot dog? So send out the invitations and get ready to have a backyard barbeque grill party with your friends and family. With all of these great items, your summer bash is sure to be a big hit.

Some people say that appearance is everything. Even if you aren’t obsessed with your appearance, it is fun to get dressed up in chef apparel before you start cooking. It makes things more fun and lighthearted, but the items also serve practical uses while you are working at the grill. Start with a bib apron which will protect your clothes from spills and splatters. Oven mitts will protect your hands and arms from burns as you take hot food off of the grill. And of course the look isn’t complete until you don a chef’s hat on your head, which will also keep your hair out of the food. Now everyone will know who to compliment for the fabulous food.

After you get dressed, it’s time to prepare and cook the food. It can be hard to get hamburgers to consistently be the same size and have that perfectly round appearance. A hamburger patty press will mold your burgers into the perfect size and shape every time. If steak is more your style, a meat tenderizer will help make sure your steak is tender and melts in your mouth. Simply hammer the steak to tenderize the meat while your mouth waters in anticipation. Everyone loves grilled kabobs, so choose some metal skewers or bamboo skewers. Kabobs are a great way to be creative because you can create your own unique combinations. Some favorite kabob foods are chicken, shrimp, onions, peppers, and pineapple. When your food needs flipped over, a heat resistant turner is essential. You can also use the turner to remove the food once it is finished cooking. Tongs are also great for taking some items, like kabobs, off the grill.

Once the food is cooked, you will need something to serve it on. A beautiful food presentation helps the meal taste that much better. You will need a collection of serving platters and serving bowls to proudly display the feast. Compartment plates are perfect for serving a variety of times. Some favorites include a vegetable tray, a fruit tray, a cheese platter, and even a chip and dip plate. Unique pieces like this wrap plate or waterfall display riser are a great way to add some style and individuality to your table. Don’t forget about plate covers to protect the food from bugs and dust.

Of course, your guests will need something to eat all of the delicious food off of. Choose plates in bright summer colors like these ocean blue plates or these translucent green bowls. Economy flatware is a better choice than plastic silverware, but is cheap enough that you won’t have to worry about it getting ruined outside. No cookout is complete without homemade ice cream. An ice cream dipper is perfect for dipping the ice cream because it helps keep your hand from getting cold and cuts through ice cream better than a regular spoon. Dip your ice cream into an elegant glass dessert dish or metal ice cream stand.

With all of these items, you’re ready to host your summer cook out. So what are you waiting for? Head on outside and fire up the grill!

On Sunday, May 2, 2010, bike riders will set out to complete the TD Bank Five Boro Bike Tour to raise money for charity. The race takes place through the five boroughs of New York City and totals 42 miles in length. The ride begins in Manhattan and travels through Central Park, Harlem, the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn, before ending on Staten Island.

Team Ohel has raised thousands of dollars for this charity bike tour to go to Ohel Bais Ezra’s summer camp programs. These riders feel that summer camp can be a great life experience kids by providing them with lots of friends, fun, and new experiences. They work to ensure that children who come from backgrounds with poverty or domestic abuse as well as children with disabilities have the opportunity to experience summer camp for themselves. Ohel sponsors and provides scholarships to help the financial needs of these children and their families. The experiences they gain are often life changing and can help them build the interpersonal and leadership skills that will help them throughout life.

Ohel Children’s Home and Family Services works to provide homes and families for Jewish children that have endured hardships such as abandonment, abuse, neglect, and disabilities. Founded in 1969, they perform seven core services – housing, foster care, outpatient counseling, at home services, school based services, camps, and sexual abuse services. They provide these core services through their 26 programs which include the Milton and Molly Schulman Foster Care Program, the Robert and Roselin Vegh Preventative Care Program, and a toll free hotline with experts ready to provide advice on many different problems.

The Bais Ezra program was founded in 1978 and provides services to individuals with disabilities and their families. It is designed to help people with disabilities through all stages of life – from coping with their diagnosis to living a healthy and productive adult life. Bais Ezra provides services for various needs such as coordinators, residential habilitation, respite care, and recreation programs.

Lions Deal Wholesale Restaurant Supplies’ owner, Fred Schulman, will be participating in the TD Bank Five Boro Bike Tour as part of Team Ohel this Sunday. Lions Deal specializes in selling kitchenware, dinnerware, flatware, and restaurant equipment and is proud to be taking part in this event. If you would like to make a contribution to support Team Ohel and help disadvantaged kids attend summer camp, please visit their webiste.

_______________

From the Lionsdeal.com president, Fred Schulman:

This past Sunday May 2nd was a truly inspiring day for me. As president of Lionsdeal Restaurant Supplies I generally do not blog about my personal experiences but this is an exception. I was blessed with the opportunity to ride in the T.D. bank 5 borough bike tour on behalf of a well known New York charity, Ohel Children’s Home and Family Services. My wife Cindy joined me in this event. As both an OHEL Board Member and as someone who enjoys cycling, I was thrilled to be a part of Team OHEL, and to participate in the 2010 TD Bank 5 Boro NYC Bike Tour.

This year, Team OHEL’s mission was to help raise much needed funds to send children with profound disabilities to OHEL’s spectacular camp and year round recreation programs, where they get a chance to relax just like any other child, while receiving state of the art therapeutic play, caring counselors, and fabulous fun.

The ride was exhilarating. At 8am, starting time the weather was a balmy 80 degrees. We started in downtown Manhattan only steps from the site of 9/11 and took off towards the Bronx. We rode up the Harlem River drive on closed off roads…..In Queens we stopped in Flushing Park for lunch and then continued our ride into Brooklyn and ended after riding over the Verrazano Bridge into Staten Island. We then took the Staten Island ferry back to Manhattan passing the statue of liberty on our way. Riding along with over 30,000 combined with raising money for an outstanding organization was an experience I will not soon forget.

You can learn more about OHEL Children’s Home and Family Services or make a donation in support of my ride and OHEL’s children.

I would like to thank all of my associates at Lionsdeal.com for giving me the encouragement to do this ride and for the extra time off during the day to train. In particular I would like to thank. Daniel, Eric, Eyal, Harry, Jack, Josh, Lonny, Mohammed,Tobey.

Team Ohel as a whole raised over $32,000. And I was able to participate in a great event that also helped promote wellness in my community. Besides having fun and the satisfaction of giving back to this worthy cause, I even lost a few pounds training for the ride!

I would also like to thank the following major contributors who helped make this a financial success. Bob Burzin of Winco (wincous.com), Larry and Sharona Beck , Eva Hefter at Hefter Law group immigration and Visa Law, Jerome Krantz, Daniel Feinberg of Feinberg international espionage/Lionsdeal.com, Josh Schulman of Lionsdeal.com, Jack Markovic of Lionsdeal.com, Stanley E. Beck, Rivka Friedman, and Louis Greenspan, Dr. Robert and Susan Schulman, Eitan and Naomi Agbashoff, Ruth Markovic, Eric Morgan, Michal Schulman, Andrew and Debra Wolfe, and Robert Wellins.

Presentation counts in food service almost as much as the actual taste of the food. Having beautiful dishes enhances the experience for your customers by showcasing the food and blending with the theme and feeling of your restaurant. China is beautiful, but is also very expensive and delicate, making it an impractical option for most restaurants. Melamine dinnerware is a good alternative. It comes in a wide variety of colors, prints, and styles. They are very durable and resist chipping and breaking. The following suggestions are just a few of the options available when choosing melamine dinnerware for your restaurant.

If you want the simple, classic look, white plates or off-white plates dishes are always a great choice. By being understated, they allow your food to stand out and speak for itself. Black Melamine Dinnerware are also available if you want a neutral look that still is a bit unique and edgy. For a subtle pattern, choose a dish with a simple design, such as the thin green stripe on Kingston Melamine dinnerware or the red double stripes on Centennial Ultraware.

If you’re the type that loves color, there is a line of Melamine dinnerware available in many colors, such as this gorgeous blue plates. Use one color to keep it more simple and neutral or choose multiple colors to make a bold statement. For example, a Mexican restaurant could spice up their dishes with an assortment of red plates, green plates, and yellow plates plates.

A print is perfect if you really want to be unique and make a statement with your dinnerware. G.E.T. Melamine Soho Series is a square plate with a black and white floral and foliage print along the edges – the perfect blend of elegant and trendy. It is also available in a brown and crème color palate in the Olympia Series. The Venetian Series is a beautiful, bright option for an Italian restaurant. There is also a wide selection of dishes for Asian restaurants, such as Longevity and Blue Bamboo.

With such a wide variety, there is a perfect dish available for any theme and atmosphere you want for your restaurant. The plates are reasonably priced to fit any budget. And because they are high quality and durable, they will look great and last for a long time. The hardest part is simply choosing which one you want.

Pizza is certainly one of the world’s most beloved foods. Thick, thin, simple cheese, or piled high with toppings – no matter how you like your pie, you need a great pizza pan to cook it in. This post will give you information on the different types if pizza pans that are available so you can choose the one best suited to make your perfect pizza.

Most pizza pans are made from aluminum pizza pans or steel pizza pans. Both of these materials should be sturdy and long lasting though some chefs prefer one over the other. You can also find some pizza pans made out of cast iron. Fans of cast iron claim that it will give the crust an additional boost of flavor as you bake. As with other cast iron pans, it must be seasoned so that your tasty creation will not stick to it. Pans may be circular pans or rectangular pans depending on the look you want and come in a variety of sizes from small pizza pans for romantic couple’s dinner or a large pans ready to feed hungry guests at a football party.

Popular brands include All-Clad, Pampered Chef, and Old Stone, though many chefs report great success with lesser known brands as well. When comparing different pans, be sure to check the thickness of the metal. Not only will a thicker pan withstand repeat uses and the test of time better, they are also better for cooking your pizza evenly. A thinner pan is much more likely to burn the bottom and edges of your crust before it is ready to take it out of the oven. A nonstick coating will help with removal of the pizza from the dish and make it easier to clean the pan. Often referred to as air bake pans, some pans may be perforated, or have little holes along the bottom. These holes help the crust bake drier so that it does not become soggy. They also allow you to use a thin coating of cornmeal for additional flavor and texture on the bottom of the crust, if you desire.

The next step is to consider what type of crust you desire for your pizza. For a chewy thick crust, you will need a pan with raised sides to shape and contain the crust as you cook it. The most common depth for these pans is 1”, though there are also 2” deep versions available also. A spring form pan like is used to bake cheesecakes where the bottom detaches from the sides will make the task of removing a deep dish pie from the pan much easier.

If a thin, crispy crust is what your taste buds desire, then you should look for a flat pan with flat or slightly raised edges. You can find a wide variety of options in flat pans, such as coupe-style, wide rimmed, and beaded edged. The variances between these pans is slight and primarily only in visual appearance, so your decision may be based purely on the aesthetic you like best if you will be serving the pizza on the pan as well.

Another increasingly popular option for thin crust pizza are pizza stones. Just as simple as it sounds, they are a stone that is designed for baking a pizza. They are more costly than a metal pizza pan, but justify the price difference with their even cooking and unique visual appeal. Like a cast iron pan, many feel that a pizza stone adds to the flavor and charm of a pizza crust. These stones are perfect for use in creating wood fired pizzas, which are a big trend in modern pizzerias. Some brands seem prone to cracking after a few years of use, though some chefs have happily used the same stone for fifteen or more years.

Though you should never cut anything directly in any cooking pan, after slicing your pizza you can return it to the pizza pan or stone for a simple serving dish. If you prefer something more unique and catchy, you can also find a wide variety of cute pizza serving dishware. You might also find that you prefer to use pizza screens which help prevent charring and are also a great way to serve pizza. No matter how you like your pie, there is the perfect pan out there to help you create your perfect pizza.

Baking sheet pans are a necessity in any kitchen. They are a staple that every chef or home cook should own several of. Though often used for baking pastries and cookies, these pans are highly versatile. They can also be used for a wide variety of other tasks, such as a drip pan. Baking sheets come in a wide variety of sizes to suit varying needs.

The classic version of this pan is simply a flat rectangular sheet with a raised lip on one side. This lip helps the baker remove the sheet from the hot oven and the open edges are perfect for sliding cookies and other pastries off of the pan. Another version of these pans have a short lip around all of the edges. This variation is also referred to as a jelly roll pan. These are better suited for baking items that might run off, like brownies or candy bar type desserts. While they can also be used for items like cookies, the raised edges can make it more challenging to get the items off of the pan.

While baking sheet pans have traditionally been made from metal, some newer versions of this classic pan are being made out of rubber or silicone. Each material has advantages and disadvantages that chefs should consider when purchasing supplies for their kitchen.

Metal baking sheet pans are typically made of aluminum baking sheets m or steel baking sheets. Some also have a nonstick coating that helps prevent items from sticking to the pan as they cook. These pans can easily be found in a variety of sizes, including quarter size, half size, and full size. One of the greatest features of these pans is that they are durable and will last for years even with heavy use. They come in a wide variety of prices from very affordable to high end, fitting the budgets and demands of both small or large restaurants.

The primary down fall of metal baking sheet pans is that they can cause uneven heating, leading to burnt food items. This can even be a challenge when the pan is out of the oven because it retains heat for a long period of time. Removing hot items from a baking sheet pan may cause them to crumble and break. However, if you leave them on the hot pan for too long they will continue to bake and may burn or stick to the pan.

A new option on the market is baking sheet pans made from silicone. Chefs praise their ability to distribute heat evenly, making pastries and cookies perfectly browned. Silicone is nonstick, so it is very easy to slip baked items off of the sheet. Though not as easily available as metal sheet pans, silicone baking pans are becoming available in more baking sheet sizes as they gain popularity.

Critics complain that pans made from silicone cost too much and doubt their sturdiness and ability to last as long as their metal counterparts. People also worry because using silicone in this manner is relatively new, so there may be unforeseen safety risks with continually reheating this material. Silicone is also very flimsy. This makes the pans harder to carry and may cause the chef to burn them self or drop their food. It is also a challenge if you would like to cut the food while still in the silicone jelly roll pan. A little too much pressure and you can easily cut right through your expensive pan. Because these pans do not conduct heat as well, it also can be challenging to thoroughly cook the center of thicker food items.

Whichever baking sheet pan you pick, there are perks and downfalls. However, being informed can help you decide which pan is best for your kitchen. You might even find you prefer to use both depending on what you are baking. Another alternative might be to purchase silicone mats to use with your metal baking sheet pans, giving you the best of both materials.

As the weather warms up and we find ourselves spending more time in the sun, enjoying the simple pleasures that summer brings, we also find our tastes and interests adapting to the season. The summer season brings a welcomed return to the little things in life, a return to a time in our lives when we were never too busy to enjoy life itself. When the sun is beating down and we’re relaxing with friends and family, a cold beer, barbeque chicken, and corn is all we could ask for.

We start to crave different things, so when the summer comes around, your business should reflect this natural seasonal adaptation and return to simplicity. Adding little touches to your menu or variations in your catering during the summer months helps keep things exciting and maintains with the pace of summer. Some catering services fall into the trap of keeping the same menu throughout the entire year but summer is almost a holiday in itself. Your menu should be weather appropriate.

It may come as no surprise to you but dining and drinking go hand in hand especially during the warmer months when outdoor events, in general, are popular. Things like graduation parties and Fourth of July parties are so common during summer. Everyone’s looking for an excuse to get together and kick back during the warmer months.

To prepare your business for summer, you may need to get some choice items beforehand to help set the summer mood. Any sort of kebab is a good menu choice during the summer and it is also easy to make. Bamboo skewers are cheap, throwaway items that are perfect for barbeques. If you want a more elegant look, stainless steel skewers are an excellent choice.

The summer months have a different demand on a catering service and often times, a more casual approach is appropriate. Plastic cups may be substituted for glass ones during summertime parties. As far as adult beverages, you have a lot of room for creativity here. Having an extensive knowledge of summer wines is important and can be a crucial addition to any party. A classy look is achieved when wine is paired with a stainless steel wine bucket. It also helps keep the wine chilled in the heat. A quality blender is a great addition as it gives your catering operation the option to offer frozen drinks such as Pina Coladas or Virgin Daiquiris for the children. It is an investment but it could remain a part of your business for years if taken care of. With a little creativity, you can turn something as simple as plastic water pitchers into a fun opportunity to try something new like a summertime sangria mix for a party.

Summer is a time for good food, good drink and good company and with a few choice additions to your catering service, it could be something memorable and successful.
